The Chief Labour Inspector Katarzyna Łażewska-Hrycko hosted representatives of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Republic of Poland. The talks concerned, among other things, cooperation to inform Nigerian citizens about the labour laws in force in Poland.
A meeting of the Chief Labour Inspectorate's management with the representatives of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Republic of Poland was held at the Chief Labour Inspectorate on 12 March 2024. The management of the State Labour Inspection was represented by the Chief Labour Inspector Katarzyna Łażewska-Hrycko, who was accompanied by the Director of the Legal Department, Wojciech Gonciarz and the Acting Director of the Legality of Employment Department, Dariusz Górski. The Nigerian Embassy delegation was led by Patience Obinna-Okiyi, Minister/Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Saka Lawal, Head of Chancery, and Charity Okey, Protocol Officer.
By way of introduction, the head of the inspection, Katarzyna Łażewska-Hrycko, briefly outlined the history of the office and discussed the basic tasks performed by the State Labour Inspection. Director Dariusz Górski presented statistical data on the inspection of the legality of employment of Nigerian nationals in Poland in the years 2022-2023. He also emphasised that the purpose of the SLI is not only the inspection of the observance of labour law, working conditions and the legality of employment, but also broadly-understood prevention, consisting, among other things, in informing foreign workers about their rights and obligations arising from their stay and employment in Poland.
The Nigerian party has taken interest and welcomed the Chief Labour Inspector's proposal to provide, issued in English, information materials for employees or potential employees for possible posting on the Embassy's website or other use in order to propagate the rules on the provision of work in Poland and the possible consequences and risks of working illegally.
At the end of the meeting, Director Wojciech Gonciarz proposed to organise a working meeting with specialists from the Nigerian Embassy in Poland in the future, the subject of which would be to discuss the labour laws in force in Poland, in particular with regard to the types of employment contracts, annual leaves and the obligations of the parties to the employment relationship.
